Different styles of yoga vary enormously. A beginner, whether they want to practice yoga for therapeutic purposes or just for another approach to well-being, needs to figure out what style of yoga to choose.

How to choose your style of yoga?

So we have countless options available around us, and although dozens of studies have examined the beneficial effects of yoga, there is no sure way to determine which yoga systems are best.

What is good for one person may not be good for another, and also what is good for you now may change over time depending on circumstances.

It can be tempting to start practicing yoga on your own, trying to learn from books or videos. Of course, some people have no choice, but especially in the beginning, it is much better to have a teacher next to you who can observe you and give you feedback. Without guidance, you can choose practices that aren’t right for you, or you can choose practices that aren’t right for you, but if executed incorrectly, they can even be dangerous. Yoga is a powerful practice that profoundly influences our body and mind – for better or worse, if the techniques are not executed correctly.

If you can, private yoga sessions can be an ideal way to start.

Whether this is a good choice for you depends on how much attention you need; In other words, how much knowledge and/or experience you have in yoga and your health.

The advantage of private sessions is that the teacher can evaluate you much more effectively and give you feedback. Afterwards, you will be able to decide whether you want to continue with group classes, and, if so, what kind of classes and teachers.

Most yoga teachers encourage their practitioners to stick to one style of yoga, but it is not wrong to consider other styles from other traditions. There is no question of loyalty to the teacher, each style of yoga has something specific, a person can feel free to add different techniques from other sources to his main practice.

However, I would point out one thing: superficially approaching different yoga systems without deepening at least one of them could be a mistake (unless you’re new and trying to figure out which style of yoga is right for you).

Personally, I have experienced healing in every style of yoga I have practiced, but it is not only the style of yoga that needs to be considered, but also the quality of the teacher, who can make a huge difference.
